Where the BTR-152 was based on a truck chassis the BTR-60 was designed from scratch. It was amphibious, unlike the earlier vehicle. It placed the crew at the front of the vehicle, the engine at the rear, troops in the middle, whereas the earlier vehicle was bound to follow its constraints as a truck. The older vehicle is six-wheeled the newer one is an 8x8 and the wheels on it are equally spaced.
