June 16, 1775 "About 1,200 militiamen under the command of Colonel William Prescott set up fortifications at Bunker Hill and nearby Breed's Hill, across the harbor from Boston." The Red-Coats (British) crossed the harbor and assembled at the bottom of Breed's Hill. The British won the Battle of Bunker Hill but suffered. They lost and wounded about 1,000 soldiers. ("The American Journey" Glencoe)
First of all, the Colonists fought on BREEDS HILL, not Bunker Hill.
And second, this was the first major battle between Colonists and the British.
BREEDS HILL.
NOT BUNKER HILL.
BREEDS.
The british would have to cross Boston Harber and fight up hill. The colonist already had hiding spots because it was high, they could see the whole city, and they could shoot down.
It was simply a position of strategic importants that both sides wanted.
It showed that the colonies weren't gonna go down easy. Although they lost, they killed/injured many British soldiers.
Bunker Hill was considered a strategic location because it overlooked Boston.
The hills provided good support from the enemies attacks it also gave them an advantage point because they had the higher grounds
Because the hill if properly fortified and provided with heavy artillery, dominated Boston Harbour.
