The port at Wilmington, North Carolina had significant value to the Confederates. After the Union's capture of Norfolk in 1862, Wilmington was the last major Southern port on the Atlantic coast. It was a supply source fro both Richmond and the Army of Northern Virginia.

The Port of South Louisiana encompasses 108 miles of the Mississippi River on the east and west banks. This area is home to over 40 private grain, petroleum and chemical companies. Over 4,000 vessels and 50,000 barges are served per year at the Port of South Louisiana which is the largest tonnage port in the western hemisphere. The grain from the midwest is barged downriver to the grain elevators in the Port district and exported throughout the world. 60% of the nations grain is exported from the Port of South Louisiana.
