The navy needed a supesonic carrier based fighter with superior avionics and fighter capabilities to replace the aging F4 phantom. It also needed to be big enough to carry the Phoenix missle. Grumman came up with the Tomcat and the rest is naval history. If you'd like to see some really good footage of tomcats and carrier aviation in an action movie find yourself a copy of The Final Countdown. It is about a modern day carrier going trhough a time warp and encountering the Japanese just before they bombed pearl harbor. All of the carrier landings, takeoffs, the barricade landing and flight operations are actual footage.

Yes, the F-14 Tomcat has tailerons, which provide roll control at high speeds.
The F4 Phantom II did over 1,500 mph. If you meant F14 that was a post Viet War jet called the F14 Tomcat.
Grumman Aerospace built the F-14
f14 tomcat
The F-14 fighter was known as the "Tomcat" (the final variant of the F-14 [F-14D] was known as the "Super Tomcat")
The official top speed of the F-14 is Mach 2.34.
It's accelaration is enough to pin you in the seat so you can't move.
They say approximately 1,500, but I think it was higher.
