A handful of men with power -including Hitler - believed that the Jewish people were beneath them and the only way to maintain that the German race was the only superior race was to remove others. If you watch the History channel there is a documentary that discusses Hitler's past. It is possible that his grandfather on his father's side - who was unknown - may have been Jewish. This may be a personal issue that Hitler's views began with. It also discusses moments he had as a young man where he was not treated well and the establishments were run by Jewish people.

Not that this in any way excuses what they did, because it doesn't, but the Nazis believed the Jews to be sub-human. When they mercilessly slaughtered millions, they didn't see it as murder because they didn't think they were killing humans. In addition, many of the Nazis believed that the Jewish had brought it upon themselves and deserved everything that was happening to them because of their religion and their past actions. One goal of the Nazis was to completely eradicate the Jews, meaning they aimed to end the Jewish religion and all the people that practiced it, and in effect create a nation of only pure Germans. To them, they were not being cruel, they were efficiently nearing the completion of their goal.

But they were cruel in a very very extreme sense, and I in no way condone their opinions or behaviors.

I think part of the reason stems from a desire to avenge their defeat in World War I. They felt humiliated at having lost territories and wanted to prove to the world that they could recover them. Also, Germany was having a lot of problems due to the economic recession, which seemed to render their citizens more intolerant and willing to find a scapegoat. Please notice that in no way am I justifying their acts of cruelty. I am only providing some insight into the possible causes that may have led to or exacerbated the cruelty with which they treated those deemed as their enemy.

They were mean-hearted because they hated the people. They thought that the Jews were mean because some Jews were successful in getting influenceal jobs. They were JEALOUS!
