The New Year's ball drop
At midnight in Times Square a ball is dropped on New Years Eve. The first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907 and has been dropped annually except during 1942 and 1943.
The only years when the Times Square celebration did not include a ball drop was 1942 and 1943, the height of World War II. This was in compliance with the national night time lighting restrictions. In place of the illuminated ball, there was a midnight moment of silence and the sounding of chimes.
