The United States and Soviet Russia were kind of in a race to get into space. I believe it was actually called the 'Space Race'. Sputnik 1 was put into space by the Soviets to collect data. Eventually, they actually sent a dog out there, which was the first living being in space. In the end, the US was the first country to get a man into space.
