Two of the most common "Communication Protocols" are typically ( not always ) referred to together. Transmission Control Protocol, and internet Protocol. Although they are both communication protocols, they are not the same thing. They are referred to together only when necessary, such as configuring a PC's network, as you are configuring both. Both have been around since mid 70's when they were invented, but TCP was never "added." They are just referred to together when appropriate.

In 2011 it is still not an approved ITU standard, and remain in "Request For Comment" - RFC version prior to approval.

∙ 13y agoThe US DoD, through DARPA funding "invented" the Transmission Control Protocol - TCP, as part of the Internet Protocols (IP) suite. research were conducted in many research institutes, so it was not only Stanford and MIT.
A problem with the protocol is that it has never been approved as a international standard by the ITU. Hence all revisions of this refer to a "Request For Comment" - RFC sequence.
