The north vietnamese launched the Tet Offensive; suprise attacks all over South Vietnam, including an attack on the U.S. embassy in Saigon. Americans were shocked because of the massive size of the Offensive. Americans were shocked because they have been told that the war would soon be over. Now they saw that the enemy was still stong and determined. They began to question if the government was being honset about the war.
the TET offensive was a surprise so america obviously didnt see it coming. america wasnt ready for the attack. this made the TET offensive devastating
The Tet Offensive .
The Tet Offensive .
The massive attacks by North Vietnam on U.S. and South Vietnamese forces were known as the Tet Offensive. Launched in January 1968 during the Vietnamese New Year (Tet), the offensive involved surprise assaults on numerous cities and military bases across South Vietnam. Although it was a military setback for North Vietnam, the scale and intensity of the attacks significantly shifted public perception in the United States regarding the Vietnam War.
It didn't. The First Tet Offensive demoralized the US and played a large part in our decision to pull out of Vietnam. The weird thing about Tet is, the North Vietnamese actually lost on the battlefield.
1. Cause-underestimation of the enemy. 2. Consequences-War was unwinnable. Reason war was unwinnable: Without widening the war into the neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia, which was the communist infiltration routes (Ho Chi Minh Trail specifically); and risking a confrontation with the communist superpowers (Soviet Union & Red China-which DID occur in the Korean War) it was time to either fish or cut bait; we cut bait.
waning support for the war in the US
The US Embassy was amongst those attacked.
The US Embassy was amongst those attacked.
There were several Red offensives: Tet, Mini-Tet, Easter, the '75 offensive, to name a few. If you're referring to the Tet offensive, US commanders considered that to be a communist defeat. Which, for one aspect it was, the VC practically ceased to exist after '68.
This is false. The Tet offensive resulted in temporary gains for the Viet Cong but ended up with the destruction of the Viet Cong as a fighting force. The real winners were the North Vietnamese, who planned the attacks and carried out some of the more successful operations including the daring takeover of the US Embassy building. After the Tet offensive, the Viet Cong remained active but never fielded large, well led and well equipped forces again. The North Vietnamese took over direct leadership of the fighting forces in the south and 7 years later marched into Saigon.
The high for the communists was probably the TET offensive of 1968. The low for the US was probably TET also.
