Thebes is not the Egyptian name of the city, but a name applied by the Greeks, who already had a city called Thebes in the Greek area known as Boeotia. The reason for the Greeks applying this name to the Egyptian city is unknown, but they may have mis-heard the name of one of the temples there, which may have sounded a little like "Thebes".
The Egyptian name for the city was W3st (pronounced Waset by Egyptologists); it was capital of the fourth nome (region) in Upper Egypt. At first it was just a small provincial town, but its importance increased until it became capital of all Egypt during the 18th dynasty.
