Devices of a level of complexity comparable to that of the Antikythera mechanism would not reappear until a thousand years later.
The Antikythera mechanism is a geared mechanism, believed to have been made by the ancient Greeks, made from bronze in a wooden frame. It was found on 17 May 1902 by archaeologist Spyridon Stais, who was working a shipwreck that had been discovered about 40 metres deep off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900. Since its discovery, scientists have only been able to theorise over its purpose, as no documentation appears to exist regarding this ancient mechanism. The most widey accepted theory concerning its function is that it was an analog computer designed to model the movements of heavenly objects.
