let us assume that we have a line with only one workstation. First, we will have to do all the jobs in that single workstation. That will make the job tedious for the workers. Secondly, how many items can that single workstation per cycle? the answer is just one.

You can clearly see that by adding more stations and you can reduce the cycle time, how? take for example two workstations 50% of the job is done by workstation 1(ws1) and 50% is done by ws2. also, when ws1 is done with it's jobs it move the semi-finished item to ws2 while ws1 is getting new material to do the jobs on again. So, compare to a single ws, you produce twice as much in this case.

Normally, one person would have to assemble the whole object alone, and it would take lots of time. On an assembly line, multiple people assemble little parts of a device as it moves along. That way there is little room for error , because each person has to do 1 thing. There are also robots, which assemble things, speeding up the process.
