During World War II, the Battle of Midway was important for several reasons. For one thing, it stopped cold the attempted Japanese invasion of Midway Island, an American territory west of the Hawaiian Islands. For another thing, it caused decisive losses upon the Japanese Navy -- four modern aircraft carriers that could not quickly be replaced by the limited Japanese economy -- that led to an immediate advantage for the Allied forces in the Pacific.
