Because he should not have allowed his men to give up the high ground on Senlac hill in order to pursue William's infantry (who he thought were fleeing). By chasing them down the hill his men were exposed to William's cavalry who emerged from the woods and slaughtered a large portion of Harold's men. Thus Harold's depleted army was doomed to defeat, changing the course of English history. So, as mistakes go...this was a big one!
