The button shop in "Number the Stars" was owned by the Johansens, the main characters of the book. In particular, Annemarie's parents operated the shop. It was used as a front to hide the resistance work they were doing to help Jewish families escape from the Nazis during World War II.

The button shop closed
The germans closed down all Jewish shops, thus allowing only non-Jews to have this privlege, and this is found in Chapter 3 of Number the Stars.
It was shut down because the Germans were taking over Denmark and Mrs. Hirsch was Jewish. Mrs. Johanson was upset because she realized a button shop was not causing harm to anyone. She was also worried as to how Mrs. Hirsch would earn a keep for her family without the shop.
Mrs. Hirsch is the mother of Ellen Hirsch, one of the main characters in the book "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. She is a kind and caring woman who risks her life to help protect Ellen and her family during the Holocaust in World War II.
It has been closed zero times.
