Because on short to middle distances, it has enormous penetration power and could easily penetrate a knight's armor.

The crossbow has the advantage of being much easier to master than the longbow. It takes intensive training to become an effective longbow archer, while a conscript soldier could basically be handed a crossbow and expected to be able to fire it at a target with some degree of success.

A crossbow can also be carried in a ready-to-fire position, with the string pulled back and held in place by the trigger mechanism. This means the archer only needs to point and pull the trigger. In some situations, and archer could be expected to hold his weapon at the ready for extended periods of time, which takes strength and a continuous effort. While some crossbows were difficult to draw back, once the string was in a firing position, the archer did not need to exert effort holding it there, and only needed to depress the trigger when needed. This made the crossbow a useful ambush weapon, for example.
