In the 1930s a person with a septic disease such as pneumonia frequently died. Such a disease was hard to treat. Then during World War 2, penicillin became available. Suddenly infections that had frequently caused death became cured after a few days. The difference was penicillin. A search was on for other antibiotics. Penicillin does not work for gram negative bacteria such as TB. Different antibiotics were discovered that would work with that disease.

Penicillin is an antibiotic which can be taken for a much more longer time than other antibotics. Patients who are diagnosed with Thalassemia get the Splenectomy done (removal of spleen) they are put on Penicillin tablets/injections for life. Penicillin is very safe.
