Despite the fact that he got steamrollered by Lyndon Johnson, Barry Goldwater actually carried the five states in the Deep South (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina) - by large margins too.
Despite voting in favor of the 1957 and 1960 Civil Rights Acts (which were pretty weak), Goldwater voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act that Johnson had sponsored (the one which was effective) saying "You can't legislate morality". The all-white electorates decided to break with tradition and vote for him as a result. Elsewhere in the country, Johnson used it as evidence to suggest Goldwater was a racist.
The presidential election of 1948 is considered to be the greatest election upset in the history of the United States. Opposite as to what had been commonly predicted, Democrat Harry Truman defeated Republican Thomas Dewey.
