The elephant "Stumpy" was used for the ICC 2011 Cricket World Cup as a mascot and icon. The elephant itself is an icon of India (where the majority of games were played), as there are only two varieties of elephant in the world (Indian and African). The characterisation of an elephant as a mascot would have also lent the name Stumpy to be used fittingly, as a reference to both cricket and the animal.
Ratnakaar Shetty, the tournament director quoted the following about Stumpy:
"It also emphasises the enthusiasm of youth both in general and for Cricket itself, especially on the sub-continent with its massive and dedicated following. He's stylised to give an instantly recognisable graphic strength so that with exposure his bold lines and strong colouring will instantly create a friendly face for the CWC,"
