Because they are actually floppy disks of magnetic film. They don't seem floppy when you handle them because they're housed in a rigid plastic case that lets you slide them into your computer.

That is if you still have a floppy drive on your computer.

If you look at a floppy disc from the outside, it does not look floppy. However, when you pry open the housing, then take out the disc, you can see why it is named as it is, because the disc it 'floppy'.

Most (all) modern computers don't have a floppy disk drive. A floppy disk can only hold a tiny amount of data, compared to modern flash/hard drives and DVD disks. It is still possible to buy an external floppy drive that can be connected to a computer via a USB connection.

A floppy disk is called a floppy because the original floppies were 8 inches wide and the disk was made out of vinyl so they were really flimsy and "floppy" hence came the name floppy
