Jupiter is the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Zeus, who was the main god, or the father of all the gods.

I was taught that in Latin, "father god" is Deus pater.Deus pater, over time began to sound like "joos-piter" and eventually Jupiter.

Another possibility is the Italic sky god "Diespiter"(Dies=Day, piter maybe father) who was sometimes the same as Zeus/Jupiter.
