The iPhone 4S was needed to keep Apple customers busy for a year while the iPhone 5 was being carefully prepared. The phone itself did not boast that many physical advantages over the iPhone 4. It just had a better camera, faster processor, and Siri. What made the phone worth buying was that the faster processor could run iOS 5 smoothly. Without iOS 5, people would not see anything in the new iPhone. When the iPhone 5 came out, Apple realized they made enough physical changes that they did not need to touch the iOS too much and therefore, made iOS 6.
