1) Before the printing press, all books were handwritten. They were very expensive to produce and only the clergy or the very rich and powerful had books. With the invention of the press, books became a whole lot cheaper to produce.

2) For the first time, books could be produced in volume (unlike a manuscript that would take sometimes years to be written and illuminated). So there were more books to go around.

3) With the printing press, books started to be made in the languages people spoke in. Before then, all books were written in either Latin or Greek. Only scholars were actually able to read/understand them. But now that books started to use common languages and were more accessible, the masses were finally able to read them.
