Any motor regardless of its use was invented to produce more power or to do more work than a person or animal could do. I'm sure that is the start of the term Horsepower. The amount of effort you can get out of 1 horse. An engine can produce hundreds of units of horsepower. Impractical to have 100 horses harnessed together when a small motor can do the same thing.
