Nintendo was going through a innovation phase and they decided it was time for something never seen before. They released the touch screen as their hot ticket to success. You can see later more of Nintendos innovation phase with the Wii.

The Nintendo DSi was invented to lure unsuspecting victims not knowing its inherent restrictions into purchasing it. A couple sales later and bingo bango, profit.

It was made because the technology for 3D devices was becoming more accessible. Also Nintendo need a new hand held to sell to the buyers.
