Veteran's Day was originally called "Armistice Day", in order to observe the end of WWI (The Great War). It was never thought there would be another. After WWII ended, the Federal government couldn't continue to establish other holidays, commemorating the end of each war, so it consolidated all observances into one Veteran's Day.

Why was Veterans Day originally called armistace day?

World War 1 ended in 1918 on November 11th with the Armistice. That Armistice was commemorated as the end of the worst conflict ever to occur in global history. The name was changed to Veterans Day to include those that served in World War 2 and other conflicts. At the time, WWI was the "war to end all wars." When the treaty was signed, it was the Great Armistice since there wouldn't be any more "great" wars. Since then there have of course been many wars and it's now called Veterans Day to honor all vets.
