The most amazing thing was that Hitler even allowed it to happen, at the time he had complete air superiority and could have easily bombed and strafed the withdrawing troops and practically annihilated them all (as well as sinking many of the rescue ships crossing the channel). Instead Hitler hesitated.
so they wouldn't be hit during the battle
OperationÊDynamo is the codename given to the evacuation of Dunkirk by the British in the effort to rescue allied forces in Dunkirk, France between May 27 and June 4, 1940.
338,000 soldiers survived.of which about 200,000 + were British, the remainder were French & Belgian. I'd just like to add my Granddad Daniel Patrick McCann was indeed a Survivor of Dunkirk, he went over with the liberation fleet on a rescue mission :)
Dunkirk helped get about half a million allied soldiers to safety and off Dunkirk beach. These soldiers were prisoners, and these could then help in the war on land.Let's explain what Dunkirk was first. Dunkirk is a port town in France on the English Channel. After France and Great Britain went to war with Germany they were great defeated by Germanies Bltizkreig or Lightning war. They were pushed back to Dunkirk and forced to retreat back to England. Thousands of British and some French troops crossed the Channel on Civilian and Military warships. This retreat/battle was important beacause it meant Germany had complete control over Europe until they invaded Russia in 1941. After Dunkirk Germany started Operation Sealion (The invasion of England). So it was not so important for the United Kingdom but Germany since the United Kingdom really just lost thousands of men and was forced from direct land combat. Hope this helped.
No, Dunkirk is about 160 miles north east, in the province of Nord.
so they wouldn't be hit during the battle
It would depend on your definition of "amazing." A definition from Dictionary.com is: causing great surprise or sudden wonder. If we follow this definition, you would say that a rescue for slugs might be an amazing rescue - learning that there is a rescue for slugs would probably cause you great surprise. A definition from the Urban Dictionary, however, is this: Something that is so wonderful, it is hard to find the words to match. This could be any rescue, depending on what you like. For me, Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue is an amazing rescue, because I think their mission is so wonderful. But if someone doesn't care about parrots, they probably wouldn't think Mickaboo is an amazing rescue. In short: it depends.

Directly- very little. There were no Australian forces/units involved in the initial campaign or the rescue from Dunkirk. There were however, large numbers of Australians serving in the Royal Navy and in the RAF, and many were involved in the Dunkirk evacuation. There were also a handful of Australians serving in the British Army at Dunkirk as well as Australian liaison officers.
