Why was the rifle inevented?

The simple answer is (for the same reason the spear evolved to the atlatl to the bow and arrow, as the Chinese bamboo hand cannon evolved to the smooth bore musket to the rifle), more efficient means of hunting game. That is the simple answer, there is more to it than that if you consider military applications.
