Galilee was a backwater. Damascus, to the north, was the centre of Roman power for the entire Syro-Palestine region. Jerusalem, far to the south, was the centre of power for the Jewish priesthood. The only claim to fame for first-century Galilee was that the mission of Jesus is reported to have been centred there.
Galilee is important to Jesus because of Prophecy.
Jesus being God Almighty manifest in the flesh (1 timothy 3:16), and not one to let his word fail, prophesied through the Prophet Micah (Mic. 5:2), and, in Mt. 2:23, the prophets Is.11:1, Zech. 3:8 the region and character by which he would come to be the savior of his people; to identify his person, Jesus, as the one to look to, follow, and obey as opposed to any, and all others using the same first name.
Jesus devoted most of his earthly ministry to Galilee.
It is where he grew up and spent most of his life.

In 4th chapter of Mark in the Bible, Jesus is asleep on a boat with the apostles. They wake him as they were scared because of a storm. Jesus then calms the sea of Galilee, while also showing once again, that He can perform miracles.

The first disciples Jesus called by the Sea of Galilee were Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen by trade, and Jesus called out to them to follow him and become fishers of men.
Sardines are sea water fish and would not have been found in the Sea of Galilee, which is an inland (fresh water) lake. There are, however, plenty of edible fish in the Galilee.
