The rest of the world had not seen submarines and because all of the supplies went across the English channel they could not understand why all their ships were sinking. The Germans invented them for war but they are more commonly used for deep sea exploration.
When the Germans invented submarines they also had to invent things like underwater radar so they could see where they were going.
