The Franco-Prussian War was from 1870-1871, so nobody would be using a weapon from 1766 in the Franco-Prussian War. Without better information (including which side used the weapon - French or Germans), it would be impossible to speculate. If the term "1766" is a specific model number, I am aware of no gun that has that number.

The Germans had won the Franco - Prussian war and had taken the territories Alsace and Lorraine away from France. The French began to hate the Germans. This could be a factor in the start to WWI.
Most military historians cite the advantage the Prussians had in artillery over the French army in the Franco-Prussian War. The Prussians had breech loading cannons while the French army still was using muzzle loading cannons.
