The Titanic had a system of watertight compartments and watertight electronic doors. It was believed that if a compartment was damaged, that section would be shut down and the ship would remain buoyant. The Titanic was full of wonderful new technological advancements. This along with the watertight compartments in the hull made people believe that this ship was unsinkable. It was not expected that an iceberg would cut such a long gash down the side of the ship causing flooding to five of the eight compartments. The weight of the water was too much for the ship sending it to its watery grave.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Besides all the wonderful and unique safety features built into the Titanic, there was also a sense of complacency that made people believe that ocean travel was safer than it really was. A few years before he became captain of the Titanic, E. J. Smith, was quoted as saying "I cannot imagine any condition which could cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that." It seems he was referring to all modern ships, not just the Titanic itself.
