There still IS a controversy 65 years later regarding the issue of not dropping the bombs and dropping the bombs. The reason the controversy exists is because of the severity of the damage to the people. There were people disintegrated, burned, injured in many ways and thousands died from radiation poisoning. The way the people died was horrendous and painful AND LASTING.
Some say it would have been better not to drop the bombs, to not usher the world into the atomic age. Trust me it would have happened eventually because the Japanese, Russians and Germans were all working on atomic energy and bombs. Stalin had a spy in the US atomic bomb building program. There was no way of avoiding it. The Japanese had developed a dirty bomb but had not come up with the full on bomb as the US had.
Those who were for the dropping of the bombs were the millions of Red Army Soldiers, the US and Australian Soldiers and Marines, the US Navy sailors and the millions of Japanese who would have died in the invasion of Japan had it occurred. Many of the soldiers and Marines had bountifully thanked the makers of the bomb and the crews that dropped the bomb because it saved their lives. There were even millions of Japanese who were glad the war ended because of the bombs. They wanted the war to end but their military leaders would not stop and the Japanese did not have a public voice to influence them to stop. They would not even listen to the Emperor to stop the war. The Emperor had to stop the war himself.
You have noticed that no one has ever used another atomic missile on Another Country yet. That is because the new atomic bombs would kill off 1/3 of the world with one nuclear missile, and it could kill the people who launch the bombs. No one wants to die from today's nuclear missiles. Thankfully, many have been dismantled, especially the really old ones.
