The contenders of the throne were Edgar Aethling ( Edward the Comnfessors closest blood relative alive at the time), William Duke of Normandy ( William I), Harald Hardraada and Harold Godwinson. I have no clue why they wanted it but it was probably because they wanted to be king.

there claims to the throne were

Harald

his viking ancestors had taken the country before and while they were king and queen they gave birth to his mum

Harold Godwinson

the only British contender backed up by the wicken(the council)

William

claimed that Edward the confessor promised him the throne before he died
