The imaginary lines of longitude and latitude drawn on maps and globes of the Earth, is to aid navigation and accurately locating spots on the Earth's surface.
A meridian of longitude is an imaginary line made up of all the points on earth with that longitude. If you were to draw any meridian on a globe, it would look like a solid half-circle between the north and south poles.
Every point on Earth that's exactly mid-way between the north and south poles has zero latitude, neither north nor south. If you draw enough of these points, they blend into a line called the "equator". Points closer to the north pole have north latitude, whereas, exactly as you might expect, points closer to the south pole have south latitude.
