Parthia was, for a time, was the only world power that could challenge Rome. The two powers would periodically raid into each others territories. However trade was also a major factor in their wars. Parthia controlled the trade routes from the far East. Rome wanted the goods from the East. Thus a clash. Then there was the factor of Roman pride. Crassus took an army into Parthia, was defeated, killed and lost his eagles. Julius Caesar was about to embark on a punitive war with Parthia at the time of his assassination. As events played out, diplomacy prevailed and was was averted.
