All parties were especially interested in the German rocket program which developed the V-2 rockets used to bombard London and other cities. Operation Paperclip was most successful here, as the head of the V-2 program, Werner von Braun, and his most important assistants turned themselves in to American forces, and were in the US within weeks after the German surrender. The US Space Program was built on this foundation - the German scientists and their captured V-2 rockets, which in the US were repainted and renamed the Atlas rocket.
