The First World War, then simply known as "The War," was one of the largest Calamities to befall the Western World since the Black Plague in the fourteenth century. A war had never been waged in such a Grand scale up to that point, hence it is called "The Great War," because "World War I" doesn't really capture the essence of the Grandiosity of this Catastrophe.
