Mendel used his results to form his law of segregation. He also fromed the law of independent assortment (but that isn't needed for the core course). This law segregation stated that an organisms characterisitics are made of two factors now known as alleles these factors are separated into each gamete, and unite during fertillization.
Mendel kept results of all the work he did and analysed his results. In 1866, Mendel was 44 years old, and published his findings. However, Mendel was ahead of time and nobody knew about chromosomes or genes and were left confused. He died 20 years later with all ideas ignored. 16 years after his death his work was finally recognised (1900).
Gregor Mendel wasn't famous because he was a monk and the scientists expected nothing from a monk, also he had really bad hand writing on his letters he sent out to the scientist's, and finally, because he explained science with math and scientists back then did not believe math could answer science.
While the experiments and observations were replicable no mechanism was known or could be found at that time. Also he did his work in a monastery which was outside the access of much of the scientific community so few other scientists read his papers.
Mandel studied what we now call dominant and recessive traits. he showed how some traits of an individual could be passed to their young. most of his work was done on peas and actually rejected when he asked other scientists if they agreed. it wasnt until (i believe) after his death his work was 'rediscovered' and shown to be correct and useful. the nazi conscept of a pure race used information that we had gained about human genetics (such as if you have blond hair you must be homozygous for the blond gene) and, through some unbeknown to me process, decided that this made you better than others. one thing that is important to remember is that science can tell you what is true (or rather what may be true) and not what is morally correct. in my opinion, just because you are homozygous for a specific gene, doesnt mean you are morally superior or inferior than anyone else. i would go far as to say that most people agree with this now-a-days.
