Because the raid on Dieppe showed all to clearly that if it wasn't done properly (& Dieppe was a shambles) then the Allies would not prevail. Much as the USSR needed to be helped with its struggle against the Nazis this would not occur with an allied disaster. Therefore it was wholly important that the Allies had surprise &, most importantly, air supremacy. Therefore planning & execution had to be well prepared & implemented fully. In the event only Omaha beach was a real concern, and it was costly, but the deception plan (we are led to believe) worked beyond expectation. Much as the idea of a cross channel invasion was appealing in 1943 it appears that it was impracticable and once the Allies had shown their hand & failed the defenders would be aware of the threat even more distinctly. Therefore it was a matter of get it right first time.
