∙ 13y agoIn an effort to put the entire Watergate misery behind the country, newly sworn in President Gerald R. Ford gave Nixon a "full and complete pardon", which is believed by almost every political analyst since to be the primary reason Ford was not re-elected. Historians today are more and more beginning to see the wisdom in Ford's decision to issue the pardon. Had Ford not pardoned him, there was a very good possibility Nixon wold have been prosecuted eventually, and the country would have endured the sordid spectacle of a former President being tried for abusing Presidential power. Ford wanted to avoid that at all cost.
