The juries were large (usually 500) and several sat each day, so there was a lot of time lost by them, and so there was a need to recompense them. But it was part of the way of spreading the money around as well. About half the Athenian citizens were on the public payroll in service on juries, the army, the navy, 500 councilors, and other public duties.

The old men and the boys from Athens turned out and defeated them. They went home, and the old men of Corinth jeered at them so they went back for another try. The same Athenian force caught them out of formation in some gullies and put them to rout.
