Egyptian pharaohs were pretty much kings, and there was no one to oppose them, or at least not directly. Thus, with next to no opposition, the pharaohs could do anything they wanted.
ancient Egypt originally consisted of two kingdoms, lower and upper Egypt. Lower Egypt was the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt was the land south of the Delta. A king united these two kingdoms and created Egypt.
Over the centuries the power of Egypt increased and decreased. At times the kingdom included the land now part of the nation of Syria. At times it was ruled by other nations. Even when it did not directly rule, it continued having an influence. In The Bible, (I Kings 14:25) Pharaoh Shinkink collected tribute from the nation of Judah. In the Hebrew of the Old Testament is a language similar to Phoenician except the numbers are Egyptian. Thus, the kingdom had power and influence beyond its physical borders.
The Egyptian Pharaoh was all-powerful. He was the sole law-giver, highest priest, highest judge and commander-in-chief of Egypt's army. In daily practice, given the size of the country and the primitive and slow means of communication, much of his power was delegated to local Govenors, priests and judges. Depending on the personality and interests of the current Pharaoh these officials could have great power. But even they were completely at the mercy of the Pharaoh (who by the way also was considered a God by his people) who could give power, but also take it away again.
Dang powerful but they don't have super powers. They could put you to the lions. They were considered gods and retained their divinity after death.
