Greek myths, like other myths, explain the existence of the world and many natural and cultural phenomena. They explain why we have the seasons, the narcissus flower, scorpions, writers, musicians and death.

The myths associate phenomena with specific gods:

That thunder was brought by Zeus, earthquakes by Poseidon, the sun was taken across the sky by Helios or Apollo, that Eos brought the dawn, Selene (or Artemis) ruled the moonlight, that Demeter made the crops grow, Dionysus the wine god etc.

It explained weather mostly but sometimes explained land formations or supernatural occurrences. Basically things that could not be explained by man in a rational way so many stories were concocted.
