Their martial training and discipline gave them a reputation of winning fighters.

It is interesting at the seige of Corinth a n unarmed party of Spartans were suddenly confronted by a group of Corinthian warriors. The Spartans picked up some weapons which their alleis from Sicyon had stacked nearby, and confronted the Corinthians, who, seeing the shields with the Sicyon insignia on them, naturally thought they were confronted by Sicyonians who they regarded as easybeats, and ran over the top of them. Had they known they were Spartans, they may have been more cautious, but this story illustrates that the Spartans lived on their reputation as well as their actual fighting ability.
