They both had a sense of wanting to "progress" America; however, they both wanted to progress America in different area's, which led to the hatred between the two.
The third party progressive party gave the election to the Democrat, Woodrow Wilson. Theodore Roosevelt, former Republican president, ran on the Progressive ticket ( also known as the Bull Moose party). Added together he and Taft, the Republican candidate got enough votes to win, but Wilson got more votes than either one of them separately.
William Taft caused a split in the Republican Party through his support for progressive policies, which alienated more conservative members of the party. This split was further exacerbated by his clashes with former President Theodore Roosevelt, who formed the Progressive Party and ran against Taft in the 1912 presidential election. This split ultimately weakened the Republican Party and allowed the Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win the presidency.
Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party split the Republican.
Theodore Roosevelt deserves most of the credit. Taft and Wilson were also President during its construction.
Being Roosevelt's hand picked successor, Taft's progressive reformers believed him to be one of their own, but he was also known to be a moderate jurist (an expert in the science or philosophy of law). Conservatives expected him to abandon TR's aggresive use of Presidential powers. Taft also had little regard for conservation which caused a big controversy.
The election of 1912 was important because of Roosevelt's challenges to Taft. Roosevelt felt as if Taft was too conservative and not progressive enough, and this marked a change in American history.

had not lived up to his progressive ideals and had betrayed the principles of the Republican Party. Roosevelt wanted to continue his reforms and believed that he was the best candidate to do so. He formed the Progressive Party (also known as the Bull Moose Party) and ran as its candidate in the election.
In the 1912 election, the most conservative candidate was William Howard Taft, who was the incumbent president and ran as the nominee of the Republican Party. However, Taft's conservative faction split from the main Republican Party, and a new party called the Progressive Party, also known as the Bull Moose Party, was formed. The Progressive Party nominated former president Theodore Roosevelt as their candidate, making him the most conservative candidate in the election.
One of the progressive reforms that can be attributed to the William Howard Taft administration was the Payne Aldrich Tariff Act. He also helped establish the Federal Reserve System.
In the 1912 election, Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic candidate, won against the incumbent Republican candidate William Howard Taft. The election was notable for the split within the Republican Party, as former President Theodore Roosevelt ran as a third-party candidate under the Progressive Party (also known as the Bull Moose Party). Roosevelt split the Republican vote, resulting in Wilson's victory.
