Why were all of the missions a certain distance away from each other?

Days walk or ride. The El Camino was the route taken between missions and it was just enough so a person could make the next mission before nightfall. You have to remember that it wasn't until the 1900's that lights existed for use at night. This means anything further than a day's ride was a several day trip. Night was a very dangerous place and if you didn't know an area you could die in a ditch, fall off a cliff, or get lost. Not to mention people who liked to rob travellers. The missions had to keep connected to each other and the only way was to ride there.

∙ 6y agoThey were a days ride from each other. In a world where you walked, rode a horse, or took a wagon this was very important since it was dangerous to be on the road at night. The road linking the mission was(still is) called El Cameno Real and today the route has mission bells along it.
