∙ 13y agoSponges are typically considered the most primitive form of multicellular life. They are largely similar to bacteria colonies, but have a tendency to reform when split apart while still alive. This suggests a collective unity which is sufficient to classify it as multicellular life, and its other characteristics (such as consumption of plankton and some minimal ability to move) qualify them as a phylum under the Animal Kingdom. While modern sponges, like all other forms of life, are modern species, it is believed that the sponges were the first of the animal phyla to become established.
