As of January 2014, South Jordan, Utah is the only city with two operational Mormon Temples (Jordan River, opened in 1981; and Oquirrh Mountain, opened in 2009). Provo Utah will become the second city with two temples (Provo, opened in 1972; and Provo City Center, expected to open in 2015 or 2016).

Who many Mormon temples are there im the world?

As of December 2012, there are 140 operating Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) around the world, with 14 under construction, and 14 announced and in planning stages. If you'd like to see a list of all of them, check out the "Related Links" below. What state has the most Mormon temples?

Utah is home to the most temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) with 16 (three of which are under construction as of July 2012). Other states with a lot of temples are California (7 temples), Arizona (5 temples), Idaho (5 temples), Texas (4 temples), and Washington (3 temples). Most other states have one or two. 15 states do not yet have temples of their own. Please note that Mormon Temples are different than churches/meetinghouses. Mormon Temples are only for special ceremonies, but meetinghouses are where regular Sunday worship is held. Utah has between 2,000 and 3,000 meetinghouses, each housing from 1 to 4 congregations. California and Idaho have the next highest numbers, with about 400-500 meetinghouses each.

Why are the pyramid on top of the Mormon temples?

Most, but not all, temples and churches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) have a steeple on top of or adjacent to the main building. This is not meant to resemble a pyramid in any way, it is in following a popular Christian tradition to have a steeple on religious buildings. The steeple is meant to draw the eye upward toward God and to identify that the building has a sacred purpose. No Mormon temple has a 'pyramid' on top, and the pyramid has no symbolic meaning in Mormonism. Many steeples on Mormon temples feature a gold statue of the angel Moroni, who is heralding the return of Jesus Christ. Mormon churches usually have plain steeples. Check out the "Related Links" below to see example images of steeples on various Mormon buildings.

On Mormon Temples what direction does the Angel Moroni point his horn and why?

There is no set direction in which the Angel Moroni points. And in fact, as of 2013, eight Mormon Temples don't have any Angel Moroni statue at all. Eight additional temples have received a statue several years after their dedication to help identify them as Mormon Temples. On most temples, the angel statue faces east if possible. This is supposedly because Moroni is meant to be heralding or signaling the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, whom is often associated with the east in scripture; but this is more of a tradition than an official belief or practice. There are several temples where the angel faces another direction simply because of the direction of the building or the lot it was built on. On five temples (Seattle, Manilla Philippines, Taipei Taiwan, Spokane, and Nauvoo, Illinois), the angel faces due west because the temple faces west.

Does Mexico or New Mexico have temples?

You mean modern temples such as Christian, Baptist or Mormon? In that case both qualify as such. Ancient temples built by Native American civilizations are usually found in central and southern Mexico (the country). In northern Mexico and New Mexico, most peoples were semi-nomadic, meaning few (if any) buildings, including temples, exist.

What is the Mormons place of worship called?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) hold their regular Sunday worship services and congregational activities in a church. A Mormon church can also be called a meetinghouse. These terms (church and meetinghouse) are used interchangeably; both refer to the same building. Mormon churches and the services held there are open to the public. Mormon churches are quite similar to other Christian church buildings - there is a large sanctuary or chapel for the main service, a fellowship hall or gym for activities, several small classrooms, and offices for congregation leadership. Mormons also have other buildings for worship. These buildings are called Temples. Temples are the most sacred places on earth to Mormons, and because of this, only faithful adult Mormons may enter. Temples are used only for special ceremonies and ordinances, such as weddings. Temples are much larger and more expensive than a regular church or meetinghouse, and can usually be identified by a golden statue of the Angel Moroni on the top of the spire. Check out the "Related Links" below for images and virtual tours of Mormon churches and Temples.
