In WW1 and WW2 U- Boats were produced to disrupt enemy shipping. In war if you use submarines to sink enemy ships you ensure that the enemy doesn't get supplies and also your own ships are at less risk if the submarines sink warships. In WW2 the Axis used U- Boats to stop the Americans from giving supplies to the UK and the Soviet Union.
